Soccer
Development Program
The Soccer Development Program at Castlemaine Secondary College was developed in 2026 in recognition of the exceptionally strong participation and interest in soccer across the Castlemaine region. The program was established with the vision of creating a specialised sporting pathway for students and becoming one of the pilot programs at the college.
The program is designed to value-add to students’ broader educational experience by developing football skills, athletic performance, leadership and football intelligence through structured, high-quality coaching and education. Students participate in one or two morning sessions each week, creating an opportunity to begin the day with physical activity, teamwork and skill development in a positive and supportive environment.
The program is currently led by Glen Springate, an extremely experienced and knowledgeable coach who also works with Bendigo City FC through their junior development programs. Glen brings significant expertise in player development, coaching education and skill acquisition, helping students develop both their technical ability and understanding of the game.
Research consistently highlights the benefits of exercise in improving focus, wellbeing, confidence, energy levels and readiness for learning. The Football Development Program supports students to establish positive lifelong habits while strengthening both physical and mental wellbeing.
The program focuses on developing Football Victoria’s Four Core Skills:
- 1v1 Attacking
- Striking the Ball
- First Touch
- Running with the Ball
Students also develop tactical understanding and “Football IQ” through game analysis, match discussion and applied learning opportunities. Alongside skill development, the program places a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, resilience, leadership and communication.
Students are encouraged to demonstrate the college values of Aspiration, Respect and Empathy through the way they train, compete, support teammates and represent the college both on and off the field.
A unique feature of the program is its connection with local football organisations including Bendigo City FC, Football Victoria and Castlemaine Goldfields FC. These partnerships provide students with opportunities to strengthen community connections, explore coaching pathways and apply their leadership skills in real-world sporting environments.
Programs operate each term and are generally run as eight-week programs beginning in either Week 2 or Week 3 of the school term. Information regarding upcoming programs, registration and participation details is distributed to students and families either at the end of the previous term or during Week 1 of the new term.
The Soccer Development Program continues to play an important role in fostering student engagement, promoting inclusion and wellbeing, and providing students with meaningful opportunities to pursue their passion for football within a supportive school environment.
