VCE – Vocational Major (VCE-VM)
The VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM) is a senior secondary pathway designed for students who learn best through practical, applied and hands-on experiences. It provides a recognised Victorian Certificate of Education while focusing on real-world skills, workplace readiness and personal development.
VCE-VM is ideal for students who are considering apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE, further vocational training or direct entry into employment.
What Students Study
Students complete a structured program that includes:
- Literacy – building communication skills for everyday life, work and further training
- Numeracy – developing practical mathematical skills used in real-world contexts
- Work Related Skills – preparing for employment through resume writing, interview skills, workplace expectations and industry knowledge
- Personal Development Skills – focusing on teamwork, leadership, community engagement and self-growth
- VET (Vocational Education and Training) – nationally recognised industry qualifications
VET is a core component of VCE-VM and allows students to gain practical, job-ready skills while still at school.
Learning Approach
VCE-VM focuses on applied learning, meaning students:
- Learn through real-life projects and experiences
- Participate in community-based activities
- Develop independence and responsibility
- Strengthen teamwork and communication skills
- Engage in Structured Workplace Learning where appropriate
The program connects classroom learning to real-world applications, helping students understand how their skills transfer beyond school.
Pathways After VCE-VM
VCE-VM supports a range of post-school pathways, including:
- Apprenticeships and traineeships
- TAFE and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
- Certificate II, III or IV qualifications
- Employment
- Further vocational study
Students graduate with a recognised senior secondary certificate and practical skills that prepare them for the workforce.
